Adding Trombone to Your Modern Band

Watch Spencer Hale, Senior Manager of Teaching and Learning at Music Will (formerly Little Kids Rock), present this clinic for music teachers at the 2022 Modern Band Summit in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Using tunes including Billie Jean by Michael Jackson, Save Your Tears by The Weeknd, Hit the Road Jack by Ray Charles, good 4 u by Olivia Rodrigo, Kashmir by Led Zepplin, I Feel Good by James Brown, and Havana by Camila Cabello, Spencer demonstrates how you can easily add trombone (horns) into your Modern Band classroom using pBone and the easy to read BrassTabs notation system.

pBone and BrassTabs can transform music lessons

In this clinic, Spencer Hale demonstrates to educators how they utilise pBone and BrassTabs in the classroom. Spencer's session includes the basic techniques needed when first picking up a trombone, such as slide positions. He encourages participants to trust their ears: a valuable skill that can be introduced to beginners. "The most important thing with all these positions is that you're listening and trying to match pitch."

Spencer also suggests some unique exercises for students who are struggling to create a sound. "A game I play with my kids is they get a piece of paper and they start by flowing the air and trying to see who can keep it the longest on the wall without touching it. That's a great one to get the lung engaged.
